Pick Best Snow Blower

Choosing the Best Snow Blowers for Residential Snow Management Use

sidewalk-snow-plowerSnowy walkways, steps, and driveways are a familiar sight during Westchester County winters. How you take care of this common chore may depend on your budget and ability. If you aren’t planning on hiring a professional snowplowing company, you may want to consider purchasing a snow blower for your personal use. Landwork Contractors loves our Westchester and Putnam County neighbors. We want to help you stay safe this winter with clean sidewalks and driveways.  To help you manage the snow and ice this year, we’ve come up with a quick guide for choosing the right snow blower.

Choosing the Right Snow Blower for Your Home

Shoveling snow and clearing driveways or walkways during winter can be a strain on your health. If the idea of shoveling your drive or walkway after a heavy snow storm seems like a daunting task, it may be time to invest in a quality snow blower. The problem is, which one? Here are a few important steps to take and factors to consider as you begin your search for a quality snow blower:

  • Start Early- Finding a quality snow blower that will fit your needs takes time, so start your search in the Fall.
  • Do Your ResearchGo out and look at reviews, study different models and brands, ask your friends for their recommendations. A great place to start is this incredible guide at Consumer reports. The trusted experts at Landwork Contractors highly recommend using this guide throughout your search.
  • sidewalk-snow-blowingUnderstand Your Limitations – Don’t go out and buy the most expensive or biggest snow blower on a whim. Understand the limitations of your budget and your physical abilities. Just because snow blowers make snow removal easier doesn’t mean they are always lightweight or easily handled. Be careful and know what you are purchasing.
  • Quality Is Key!- In the same way you shouldn’t purchase the most expensive equipment, you also shouldn’t purchase the cheapest. A good quality snow blower is an investment. Snow blowers range in cost from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. Make an investment that is good quality and able to deliver great results year after year.
  • Know What You Need- When you start looking at snow blowers, consider what your snow removal needs are. Ask these questions:
  • How much does it typically snow in your area?  Electric snow blowers can typically handle up to 6 inches of snow before they start to get a little weighed down.
  • How big is the area you will need to routinely clear each winter? Don’t get a wide blower for a narrow sidewalk.
  • What type of environment do you have? Flat areas? Hilly or bumpy areas? More difficult terrain will need more powerful equipment.
  • How big of a machine can you realistically handle? Don’t get a huge, heavy machine you can’t move around in the snow or it will end up sitting in your garage while you’re out shoveling.
  • Electric or Gas? Single or Two Stage? The choice between an electric or gas snow blower and the power level depends on your personal needs. Electric single stage mowers work great for lighter snow areas and on flat to slightly hilly areas. They are not meant for big inclines or overly rugged areas. Single stage gas blowers are bit more powerful and can reach up to 8 inches of snow, while two-stage gas mowers can handle all sorts of pathways up to 8 inches of snow. However, two-stage gas blowers are heavier and more expensive than their single stage counterparts.

Regardless of which snow blower you choose, make sure you always stay safe during snow removal. Wear multiple layers with waterproof outer layers and waterproof shoes. Always be aware of weather conditions and keep animals and children away from the snow blower during and after snow removal.

Finding the Best Snow & Ice Management Plans for Your Company

car-completly-under-snowWinter is coming up fast. Is your business ready for icy drives and snow-filled parking lots? If you haven’t yet planned for winter snow and ice removal, Landwork Contractors is here to help. We have over 16 years of experience plowing and de-icing Westchester winters. To help you get started, we’ve come up with a rundown of common snow and ice management services.

Per Push Plans for Snow & Ice Management

Snow and ice management are vital to winter safety. Sometimes businesses only need occasional snow management. Perhaps your office has on street parking or has a smaller parking lot that seldom ices. In these instances, you might go with a per push service. A company that offers snow plowing or management services “per push” charges clients per each service they provide. So if the snow plowing company comes out and plows your parking lot and snow blows your sidewalks and de-ices your steps, each service will be charged separately each time. Per push plans are perfect for smaller businesses or unique areas that require less care. For bigger companies and properties, an all-inclusive plan is probably better.

All-Inclusive Snow & Ice Management Plans

landwork-contractors-truck-snow-plowingSome businesses require more attention during winter weather. For these businesses, snow and ice management can be an all season long continuous task. For example, banks, grocery stores, churches, schools, medical buildings, and municipal buildings need to stay open, safe, and easily accessible throughout winter. In this case, or if you have a larger business space or manage an apartment complex or housing development, an all-inclusive plan will work best. This plan will be set for an agreed upon amount of time with perimeters set by you and the snow plowing company.

Features to Look for in a Snow Plowing Management Service

Not all snow plowing and ice management services are created equally. Getting unpredictable or unreliable snow service can put you and your staff in danger. If you need snow or ice management you need to be sure that the company you are using is able to deliver the services you need in a dependable manner. Here are a few things to look for when you are searching for a snow management company:

  • landwork-contractors-truck-snow-plowing-at-nightAre they experienced?
  • How big is their snow management fleet?
  • Do they offer 24-hour availability?
  • Do they have a reputation for being on time and efficient?
  • Are plans customized to individual needs?
  • Do they do salt applications?
  • Do they have sidewalk or walkway services?
  • Do they offer off-site snow removal?
  • Is there a weather monitoring procedure used to help plan for upcoming winter storms?
  • Do they do pre-storm applications?

These questions will help you find a snow and ice management service that will be dependable and trustworthy all winter long.

Plan Now & You’ll Be Prepared For Winter Weather

With winter right around the corner, planning for snow and ice management needs to be a top priority for both commercial business owners as well as residential property owners.  We all know that snow and ice can show up overnight, you’ll need to find a way to manage winter weather. Some questions you might need to consider are:

  • What is your plan for snow and ice management for winter?
  • Have you budgeted for products and/or services to help control snow and ice on your property?
  • Is this a project you want to handle yourself or do you want to hire someone to do it for you?
  • Do you have the right tools and materials to keep your business or home running safely during winter storms?
Snow and ice management can be overwhelming, even for a seasoned New York resident. As snow and ice control experts in Westchester County, Landwork Contractors knows how to handle winter storms of every shape and size. Here are our tips to help you prepare for winter weather:

  1. Choose the Right Products for the Right Job- Many people stockpile ordinary salt rock sold in convenience stores and gas stations thinking it will work for everything. The truth is, rock salt is actually very damaging to certain materials, particularly concrete. An expert, like our ice control management team members, will help you know the difference. We recommend using specific ice-melting materials for the different areas of your home. Use this handy chart to help you know the difference between rock salt and calcium chloride.
  2. Get the Right Tools for the Job- Controlling ice and snow isn’t something you can do with a broom and an ice scraper, not in Westchester County. You have to have the appropriate tools for the job. Otherwise, you could cause damage to your home, create dangerous areas for your family or employees, and even get hurt yourself. If you’re going to try to master the job make sure you include the following tools:
    • Warm Waterproof Gloves
    • Warm Yet Breathable Clothing
    • Waterproof Jackets
    • Sturdy Good Quality Shovels
    • Quality Snow Blowers
  3. Ask Questions of Your Ice Management Crew– If you have decided to hire a professional to handle your ice and snow management, ask questions. Any professional company should be able to answer the following questions:
    • What type of ice melting products do you use?
    • What is your application process?
    • Do you offer emergency services?
    • Do you use snow blowers or shovels?
    • How much equipment do you have?
    • How big is your ice control fleet?

Landwork Contractors uses many of the same methods utilized by the New York State Thruway Authority to prepare for winter storms big or small. We use tried and true methods that go above and beyond regular standards to keep your business winter ready.

  • Snow removal to remote locations when applicable

  • Sidewalk and Walkway Snow removal
  • Snow shoveling and Snow blowing in hard to plow areas
  • Salt and calcium applications to help rid areas of snow.

These are some of the services you will have when you use Landwork Contractors for your winter readiness plan.

How Do We Do It All?

Landwork Contractors uses a specialized and experienced team of trained and insured snow plow operators to handle winter weather. First we monitor winter weather patterns. When we see a storm coming in, we are ready to move before it hits. Our team uses salt and calcium for ice control. Salt lowers the melting point of ice which creates a chain reaction anywhere the salt hits the ice. Melted ice is easier to clear away and a lot less dangerous for pedestrians. We use salt applications on blacktop and driveway surfaces. Calcium is applied to walkways and concrete surfaces. Ice melts faster and at lower temperatures with calcium though it isn’t a practical use for large areas like roads and parking lots.

Besides using treatments like salt and calcium, we also use heavy equipment and good old hard work to clear pathways and parking lots. Landwork Contractors will shovel out areas our snow plows can’t reach and even blow the snow away when we can. Our team is ready to get rid of the snow anyway we can so you can go about your day safely.
